Fieldstone Day School - Toronto Private School

Private Schools List in Toronto

An independent school for girls and boys, grades K to 9. Located in North Toronto.
The mandate of Fieldstone's Upper School is really quite simple: to build on the success that the Lower School has had in producing confident and able students and to further nurture and prepare those students for the challenges and rigours that await them at University and beyond. As a ministry-inspected institution, Fieldstone's Upper School delivers Ontario secondary school courses in a manner consistent with the curriculum expectations and assessment/evaluation techniques used throughout the province.

The Upper School embraces Fieldstone's established tradition of Global Knowledge (our class of 2007 was the first eligible class to earn Fieldstone Global Knowledge Upper School Diploma), and beginning in Grade Seven, begins to emphasize the skills that our students will require for success in secondary school and university. To the school's overall mission statement, the Upper School adds one more very important point: we strive to prepare our students for acceptance into and success at the university programme of their choice.

Our growing group of graduates has had tremendous success in gaining admission to some of Canada's most competitive university programmes. Currently, proud Fieldstone alumni can be found on the campuses of the Harvard, University of San Diego, University of Toronto, Queens, York, Western Ontario, Carleton, Waterloo, McMaster, University of Oldenberg, Amritsar Medical College in India and several other universities throughout Ontario.

While academic achievement and success at university are the measurable indicators of a successful Upper School, there is so much more that young people need in order to flourish at school. Fieldstone provides the co-curricular and leadership opportunities necessary for our students to hone their skills and build their confidence outside the classroom. In a small and nurturing environment, all students have the opportunity to experience what it means to be an active participant in a dynamic community. Whether by playing on one of our many athletic teams, running for student government or showing leadership in community service, Fieldstone Upper School students gain a unique sense of belonging and the satisfaction that they are helping to build traditions that will last for generations to come.

Beginning with the classes of 2007 and 2008, Fieldstone Upper School students will have an opportunity to earn a parallel Diploma in addition to their Ontario Secondary School Diplomas (OSSD). The Global Knowledge Upper School Diploma bridges the ideals of Fieldstone's Global Knowledge K-8 curriculum with the requirements of the OSSD. The Diploma will also challenge Upper School students to foster their leadership skills and become increasingly involved in the school community as well as the community at large.

The requirements of the Diploma are as follows:

Completion (within a student's Upper School career) of four optional courses chosen from among the Global Knowledge Diploma selections. These courses will be selected based on their connection to the Cultural Literacy spirit that drives Fieldstone's K-8 curriculum. The Global Knowledge course selections include the following:

Collection (within a student's Upper School career) of at least 6 leadership/participation points. Points can be earned by participating in school athletic, leadership or artistic endeavours. In the case of athletics, points will be awarded for both playing and non-playing (manager, etc.) participation and in the case of arts, behind-the-scenes participation will be rewarded on a par with performing.
Students who achieve all of the above requirements will receive both their Ontario Secondary School Diploma and their Fieldstone Global Knowledge Upper School Diploma on Graduation Day in June.

Students who choose to pursue this unique diploma will take advantage of all that the Fieldstone Upper School has to offer. These young leaders and scholars will receive not only the diploma as a tangible reward for their efforts, but also innumerable intangible results that they will carry with them to university and beyond.
